Sauerland Tour 2026: All information on the route, dates, and participants

Sauerland Rundfahrt 2026: Alle Infos zu Strecke, Terminen und Teilnehmern

The Sauerland Rundfahrt is one of the long-standing cycling events in the Sauerland region and will undergo a turning point in 2026. What was previously a one-day race will become a multi-day UCI stage race in Germany. This elevates the region into the circle of the few German venues hosting an international road cycling stage race. For riders, this cycling race in the Sauerland means a demanding race program over several days, while for spectators, it offers an entire week of racing with stage finishes in various towns across the region.

When and where will the Sauerland Rundfahrt 2026 take place?

The Sauerland Rundfahrt 2026 will take place from September 3 to 6, 2026, and will run over four race days. Arnsberg and Winterberg will serve as the central hubs of the stage race, acting as the start and finish points for individual stages. Additionally, other Sauerland towns will host individual stages or serve as passage points.

Those planning a visit should consider the four days as a cohesive event. Each stage has its own start and finish location, allowing you to explore different regions of the Sauerland on different days. In addition to the racing, supporting programs will take place in the stage towns. Around the finish areas, there will be food stalls, stage programs, and activities for families. For vacationers, it is worth combining a visit to the race with a stay in the region, perhaps with a hike around Winterberg or a visit to the historic old town of Arnsberg on a race-free afternoon.

The route: How long is the Sauerland Rundfahrt and how much vertical gain does it have?

The course of the Sauerland Rundfahrt is mountainous and subjects riders to significant climbing demands. The Sauerland, with its long, irregular ascents, defines the character of the race. Pure sprinters will find it difficult, and a field of climbers usually prevails. A central element is the mountain finish at the Kahler Asten, a classic finish point for a difficult stage. The Kahler Asten is the second-highest peak in the region. The highest mountain is the Langenberg (843 m).

To put the new structure in perspective, it is worth looking at the history. The former professional one-day race covered a distance of nearly 200 kilometers and included more than 3,000 meters of vertical gain. With the transition to a stage race, the effort is now spread over four race days, meaning the total distance and cumulative elevation are significantly higher than previous values. Instead of a single hard day's effort, consistency over several days will determine the outcome in 2026.

Stage Start and Finish Distance Character
Stage 1 Time Trial Brilon - Scharfenberg - Brilon 13.5 kilometers Important for general classification
Stage 2 Brilon to Siedlinghausen 157 kilometers Mountain stage
Stage 3 Circuit Wenholthausen 137 kilometers Selection in the field
Stage 4 Arnsberg to Winterberg 130 kilometers Mountain stage

Since the final route details will only be confirmed by the organizer shortly before the race, the information on individual stages is for orientation purposes only. The mountainous basic character, with the mountain finish at Kahler Asten as the sporting highlight, is certain.

What is the Hirschberger Wand at the Sauerland Rundfahrt?

The Hirschberger Wand is considered the steepest climb of the route and has become the most important spectator hotspot of the Sauerland Rundfahrt. The climb near Hirschberg in the Sauerland demands short but very intense efforts from the riders, with double-digit gradients of up to 33%. Such ramps create attacks and time gaps in the race because the field breaks apart on the steepest section.

For spectators, the Hirschberger Wand offers the best combination of sport and atmosphere. A festival-like mood regularly prevails on the climb because the riders are moving slowly enough to see them up close. Anyone wanting to secure a spot should arrive early and wear sturdy shoes, as the embankments on the side of the road are uneven. A location in the upper third of the climb is worthwhile because the selection becomes visible there and the riders are fighting the hardest. You should bring your own drinks and food, as provisions directly on the course are limited.

Time trial on Thursday in Brilon

A time trial in Brilon supplements the stage program of the Sauerland Rundfahrt and takes place on Thursday. In the individual time trial, every rider starts alone at fixed intervals. There is no drafting behind opponents; everyone is on their own. As a result, the time trial separates riders based on their raw physical performance and often provides clear time gaps for the general classification.

For the overall ranking, the time trial has special significance. Anyone who wants to compete for the overall victory in the mountain stages must post a solid time here to avoid falling too far behind. Time trial specialists, on the other hand, use the stage to gain ground before heading back into the difficult climbs against the climbers.

Brilon as a venue offers a compact setting for spectators. Since all riders go over the same course one after the other, the racing can be followed over a longer period. A spot near the start or finish ramp is recommended, as the timing and the last intense meters of the riders can be seen there. Friday as a race day is well-suited for spectators who want to avoid the larger crowds on the weekend.

Participants: Who is allowed to participate and is there a mass-participation race?

At the Sauerland Rundfahrt 2026, two worlds collide: the international professional field of the UCI race and the offerings for ambitious amateur riders. Eligibility to participate depends on license status and the respective race format.

If you are a professional with a UCI license and belong to a relevant team, the way to register is through your team's regular entry process. The race is classified as a UCI 2.2 event. This category opens the field for Continental teams as well as WorldTour development teams. Consequently, in addition to established Continental professionals, young talents from the youth structures of major teams also participate. For spectators, this means a field with sporting quality and riders on the verge of reaching the highest racing class.

The guest rider regulations make the starting field additionally interesting. Development teams can bring riders from their own WorldTour squad to a limited extent. As a result, names that are otherwise only known from major stage races may appear in the field. The organizer will announce the exact entry conditions and the composition of the field before the race.

If you are an amateur rider without a UCI pro license, you should look at the "Jedermannrennen" (mass-participation race) Sauerland as part of the event. This format allows ambitious recreational athletes to ride on parts of the course themselves and experience the challenge of the Sauerland. Registration is usually handled separately through the organizer's website, and specific classification and safety regulations apply. Those wishing to ride the Jedermannrennen should pay attention to the official notice, as the number of participants, route length, and entry fees are determined each year.

The following overview categorizes the entry options by rider type:

Rider type Access method Race format
Professional with UCI license (Continental Team) Registration via team UCI 2.2 Stage race
Youth rider (Development Team) Team registration, partly via guest rider rule UCI 2.2 Stage race
Ambitious amateur rider Individual registration via organizer website Jedermannrennen

Frequently asked questions about the Sauerland Rundfahrt

Where is the best place to watch the race live?

Spectators will find the best atmosphere at the mountain classifications and in the finish area. The Hirschberger Wand, as the steepest climb of the course, offers race action up close because the riders are moving slowly there. The mountain finish at the Kahler Asten is the place for the decision on the overall victory. In the stage towns themselves, the catering zones and finish areas attract visitors with supporting programs. If you are flexible, combine a location on the climb with a later spot in the finish area.

Are there road closures during the event?

Temporary closures along the route are to be expected on all four race days. The police usually work with rolling road closures that precede the riders, closing the roads only for the duration of the passage. In the finish area, however, fixed closures apply for a longer period. Residents and visitors should plan their arrival early and observe the official closure schedules, which will be published before each race day.

Are e-bikes allowed in the Jedermannrennen?

E-bikes are generally excluded from the official timing of the Jedermannrennen. Classic road bikes that meet the safety regulations of the German Cycling Federation (BDR) are permitted. In individual cases, organizers establish separate classification categories, so it is worth checking the current official announcement before you register.

How can I apply to be a volunteer for the tour?

Volunteers can register directly via the official website of SVL Sports. We are primarily looking for course marshals to ensure safety along the route. Registration is done via a form, and a briefing will take place before the race, in which tasks and locations will be explained.
