Cube Stereo Hybrid One44: All-Mountain E-MTB for trail and tour

The Cube Stereo Hybrid One44 is a versatile All-Mountain e-MTB for long tours, technical climbs, and demanding descents. Its intended use lies between a comfortable full-suspension tourer and a descent-oriented enduro. Depending on the frame version, 140 mm or 150 mm of travel is available at the fork, while the rear provides 140 mm. This makes the bike suitable for rooty forest trails, rocky passages, and alpine tours, without feeling sluggish on easier routes.

Cube divides the series into HPA aluminum and HPC carbon. All current models use a Bosch Performance Line CX motor, or a CX-R on select top-tier models, an integrated 800 Wh battery, and a dropper seatpost. The major differences lie in the frame, suspension, brakes, and drivetrain. Those looking for a robust full-suspension trail bike with mounts for everyday accessories will find suitable HPA versions. The HPC models are aimed more at sporty riders who prioritize lower weight and a downhill-oriented suspension.

HPC or HPA: Which frame suits your trails?

At Cube, HPC stands for High Performance Carbon. On the Cube Stereo Hybrid One44 HPC, the main frame is made of carbon, while Cube uses 6061 T6 aluminum for the rear triangle. This mix of materials saves weight on the large front triangle while keeping the rear end stiff and durable. Therefore, the term carbon frame in the context of HPC does not mean that every part of the frame is made of carbon.

The HPC models feature 150 mm of travel at the fork and 140 mm at the rear. A 36 mm suspension fork, the adjustable slack head angle, and the sporty geometry give the bike plenty of composure on fast and steep descents. Depending on the model and frame size, the handling can be tuned more towards agility or stability using adjustable headset cups in the head tube.

This is helpful if you frequently switch between narrow forest trails and open, fast descents.

HPA stands for High Performance Aluminium. The HPA versions use a complete aluminum frame and 140 mm of travel at both the front and rear. Their geometry is slightly more comfort-oriented. Mounting points for mudguards, kickstands, and luggage racks expand their range of use. The FE models come already equipped with features suitable for everyday use. FE stands for Fully Equipped. Such variants are suitable for riders who want to use the same E-MTB for commuting, touring, and off-road riding.

If you want to ride as sportily as possible and use the bike frequently on challenging descents, the HPC frame provides the more suitable foundation. The lower weight is particularly noticeable when repositioning the bike, on narrow trails, and during transport. If robustness, price, and mounting options are more important, HPA makes sense. The higher weight is less noticeable while riding than when carrying or loading the bike, because the Bosch motor compensates for a large part of the additional mass during acceleration.

Bosch Performance Line CX with up to 120 Nm

Most Cube Stereo Hybrid One44 models use the Bosch Performance Line CX for the smart system. The motor is delivered in its default setting with 85 Nm of torque, 600 watts of peak power, and 340 percent maximum assistance. On compatible models, the performance values can be adjusted via the eBike Flow app. Following the authorized Performance Upgrade, up to 120 Nm, 750 watts, and 600 percent assistance are possible with the current drive unit, depending on the model configuration.

The unlocking does not depend on the motor alone. Cube must have authorized the higher values for the specific bike. Furthermore, the drive unit and the other system components must be at an appropriate software level. The eBike Flow app shows which maximum values your bike supports. For current One44 models, Cube already specifies up to 120 Nm for the CX drive.

Increased torque is particularly helpful on steep ramps, when starting on a slope, and when there is a high total weight of bike, rider, and luggage. On long gravel climbs, a moderate setting is usually sufficient.

The full motor power shows its strength on technical uphills, when the bike has to be maneuvered over steps or loose stones at low speeds. Even so, tire traction remains the deciding factor for how much power is transferred to the ground. Too much thrust on loose terrain can cause the rear wheel to spin.

The higher torque also reduces range and places greater stress on the chain, cassette, and tires. For normal tours, it is therefore sensible not to keep the motor permanently at its maximum settings. An adjusted setting offers more control and reduces wear.

The Bosch Performance Line CX-R is used in selected top models. It reacts more directly and is tuned for particularly sporty use. The CX-R is regularly supplied with higher power values than the standard CX and can also provide up to 120 Nm of assistance. It is of interest if you frequently ride technical climbs and prefer a quick reaction to pedal pressure. For tours and normal trail riding, the Performance Line CX already offers sufficient reserves.

800 Wh battery and real-world range

The Bosch PowerTube 800 is standard equipment on the current Cube Stereo Hybrid One44 models. Its high capacity is well-suited to the bike's intended use. An e-MTB full-suspension bike requires more energy off-road than a light trekking bike, as wide tires, the suspension system, inclines, and a high total weight increase consumption.

A fixed range specification is therefore not very meaningful. With the 800 Wh battery, up to about 180 km is possible under favorable conditions. On steep trails with high assistance, the range can drop to around 35 km. The altitude climbed is also important. A flat route of 80 km may require less energy than a 35 km mountain tour with 1,500 meters of elevation gain.

Driving situationTypical modeTotal weightReference value
Flat routes, steady pace, little headwindEcoApprox. 100 to 110 kgAround 120 to 180 km
Mixed tour with forest paths and moderate climbsTour or Tour+Approx. 110 to 125 kgAround 70 to 110 km
Trail tour with frequent inclineseMTBApprox. 115 to 135 kgAround 45 to 80 km
Steep terrain with high assistanceTurbo or eMTB+Approximately 120 to 145 kgAround 35 to 55 km

These values serve as a guide. Tire pressure, surface conditions, temperature, and cadence affect the result. Frequent acceleration also consumes energy. In winter, the usable range decreases because low temperatures can temporarily reduce battery performance.

The PowerTube 800 is protected within the down tube. You can charge it directly on the bike or remove it from the frame after unlocking it. A push-button system ensures easy removal. This is practical if there is no power outlet in your bike storage area or if you prefer to store the battery at room temperature. A cover protects it from dirt and splash water while riding.

A Bosch PowerMore 250 can increase the capacity by an additional 250 Wh. However, its use requires a compatible charging socket base, suitable mounting points, and appropriate software. Not every frame size and model variant automatically meets these requirements.

Therefore, check compatibility using the specific item number. If the range extender is supported, it is particularly suitable for transalpine crossings, long day tours, and routes without reliable charging options.

  • Use Eco or Tour on simple access roads and save eMTB for technical climbs.
  • Ride with a steady cadence instead of pushing heavy gears with a low cadence.
  • Check tire pressure before longer tours. Too little pressure increases rolling resistance.
  • Store the battery in a dry place during winter and not permanently in sub-zero temperatures.
  • Plan for a reserve for unplanned detours and additional elevation gain on mountain tours.

Which Cube Stereo Hybrid One44 is right for you?

The model range extends from the price-oriented HPA Pro to the HPC SLT. A higher model name generally means more adjustable suspension, more powerful brakes, lighter wheels, or higher-quality gearing. The frame within the respective HPA or HPC group remains largely the same. Therefore, it is worth choosing between aluminum and carbon first and then comparing the components.

Beginners and touring riders: Pro, EX and EXC

The Pro is the entry-level model in the HPA series. It features the 800 Wh battery, the Bosch Performance Line CX, and air suspension with 140 mm of travel. It is suitable for riders who primarily ride on forest paths, easy trails, and longer tours. On jumps, fast rock gardens, and long descents, the simpler suspension reaches its limits sooner than the more expensive variants.

The EX is aimed at riders who head off-road more frequently and desire more robust equipment. The EXC enhances the HPA platform with higher-quality suspension and braking components. Depending on the version, features such as Bosch ABS Pro are added. This can provide more control when braking on loose surfaces or in changing grip conditions.

Pro and EXC are also offered as FE versions. These models include lighting, mudguards, a side stand, and a luggage rack or corresponding all-road components. They are a sensible choice if the Cube Stereo Hybrid One44 is also intended to serve as a commuter and touring bike. For primarily off-road use, the standard version is lighter and less prone to rattling accessories.

Sporty trail riders: HPC Race, SLX, and TM

The HPC Race is the entry point into the carbon range. It combines the lighter HPC main frame with 150 mm of travel at the front and 140 mm at the rear. The Race is a suitable choice if you want the sportier frame while keeping an eye on a reasonable price level for the components.

The HPC SLX is a balanced all-rounder for regular trail rides. The suspension, four-piston brakes, and drivetrain are designed for long descents and technical sections. Anyone looking for high-quality equipment without going straight for the top model will often find the right balance of price and performance here. The SLX Evo complements the range with different components and is aimed at riders who prefer specific suspension or drivetrain options.

TM stands for Trail Motion. This version is clearly geared towards difficult terrain. A shock with an external reservoir, grippy tires, and powerful brakes improve control on long, rough descents. The TM is worth it if you regularly ride steep natural trails and actually utilize the suspension's reserves. For forest roads and simple tours, this equipment offers fewer noticeable advantages.

High-quality equipment: AT and SLT

AT stands for Action Team. The One44 HPC AT combines Fox Factory suspension with electronic Shimano XT Di2 shifting, powerful four-piston brakes, and, depending on the version, Bosch ABS Pro. The Bosch Performance Line CX delivers up to 120 Nm of torque. The AT is aimed at sporty riders who prefer highly adjustable suspension and electronic gear shifting.

The HPC SLT sits at the top of the model range. It features the Bosch Performance Line CX-R, Fox Factory suspension, and an electronic SRAM Eagle Transmission. Lighter wheels and additional carbon components reduce the weight. The SLT is a sensible choice when low weight, direct motor response, and high-quality suspension components take priority over price.

Who is the Cube Stereo Hybrid One44 suitable for?

The Cube Stereo Hybrid One44 is suited to riders looking for an e-MTB for diverse types of terrain. It climbs efficiently, remains comfortable on longer rides, and offers enough travel for demanding trail descents. The HPC versions feature a significantly sportier setup. The HPA models cover a broader spectrum of touring, everyday use, and moderate terrain.

If you primarily ride tours and occasional easy trails, an HPA Pro or EX is sufficient. For frequent technical descents, the HPC Race, SLX, or TM are better suited.

FE is the right option if you need lights, mudguards and luggage transport. AT and SLT are particularly worthwhile if you want to make specific use of electronic shifting, Factory suspension and high-quality wheels.

For occasional visits to flowy bike park trails, the One44 is sufficient. However, constant jumping, hard landings and fast enduro descents are outside its ideal range of use. In this case, the Cube Stereo Hybrid One77 with 170 mm of front and rear travel, mullet wheels and a more descent-oriented geometry offers more reserves.
