mit robustem Transportkorb, ideal für den urbanen Einsatz. Perfekt für Familien und Transportaufgaben.

Cube Cargo Hybrid: E-cargo bike for family and transport

The Cube Cargo combines a large transport box with electric assistance and a low step-through frame. It is suitable for shopping, trips with children, commuting, and commercial transport. The cargo area is positioned in front of the rider, keeping the contents in view while riding. The smaller front wheel creates space for the box, while the larger rear wheel contributes to stable handling.

A Cube Cargo can replace a car on many everyday routes. Before purchasing, however, you should pay close attention to the model year. Older Cargo Hybrid 500 and Cargo Dual Hybrid 1000 models differ from 2026 model year versions in terms of motor, battery, gear system, and maximum system weight. The current generation uses an 800 Wh battery and, depending on the version, can be expanded with an additional 250 Wh range extender. Older models operate with one 500 Wh battery or two 500 Wh batteries.

Payload and weight: What can the Cube Cargo transport?

The transport box must not be loaded with more than 60 kg. This limit applies to the entire load in the box, which includes children, the bench seat, baby seat solutions, luggage, and other items. However, the 60 kg is not a blanket value that is always available. In addition, the permissible system weight of the respective bicycle must be observed. The system weight includes the bicycle, the rider including clothing and equipment, all add-on parts, as well as the entire load. A retrofitted luggage rack, a rain cover, and accessories must therefore also be included in the calculation. The sum of all individual weights must not exceed the limit stated on the type plate and in the manual for the specific model.

AreaWeight limitExplanation
Transport boxUp to 60 kgAccommodates children, a bench seat, luggage, and other items in the box.
Rider weight for current modelsUp to 110 kgThe weight of clothing, backpack and other personal equipment is included.
Rider and bike155 kgPermissible combined weight of rider and bicycle.
Optional rear luggage carrierUp to 20 kgThe dead weight of the carrier and the load must be taken into account in the system weight.
System weight of older cargo modelsUp to 220 kg in some casesThis value can be found on models from the years 2022 to 2024, among others.
System weight model year 2026200 kg according to the system weight tableFor the specific bicycle, the type plate, operating manual, and current manufacturer specifications are authoritative.

There are differences in weight specifications between model years. For 2023 and 2024 Cargo Hybrid models, Cube specifies a system weight of 220 kg, a box payload of 60 kg, and up to 20 kg on a suitable rear carrier. In contrast, the system weight table from January 8, 2026, lists a system weight of 200 kg, a maximum rider weight of 110 kg, a box payload of 60 kg, and 20 kg on the rear for current Cargo Hybrid models.

Some product descriptions for the 2026 models still state 220 kg. Therefore, do not rely on a general value for the entire series when loading your bike. The information specific to your bicycle's article number and model year is what matters.

How is the actual payload calculated?

First, subtract the bike's ready-to-ride weight and then the rider's weight from the maximum system weight. Next, account for accessories and cargo. A current Cube Cargo Hybrid weighs approximately 47 kg, depending on the configuration. With a maximum system weight of 200 kg and an 80 kg rider, this leaves a calculated 73 kg for accessories and cargo. However, the box itself must still not be loaded with more than 60 kg. If you were to add 20 kg to the rear rack, the potential total payload would already be exceeded.

If the rider weighs 100 kg including clothing and a backpack, 53 kg remain with a 47 kg bike and a 200 kg system weight. In this case, the box must not be loaded with 60 kg, even if its construction could theoretically support that weight. The system weight limits the actual possible payload to 53 kg. Accessories reduce this value further.

For an older Cargo Dual Hybrid with an unladen weight of 51 kg and a system weight of 220 kg, the calculation looks different. A rider weighing 109 kg can still transport 60 kg in the box. There is no room left for additional cargo at the rear. A typical weekly grocery shop for four people is usually well below the box limit. With two children, school bags, a bench seat, and a rain cover, however, the weight should be added up precisely.

Heavy items should be placed as low and as centrally as possible in the box. Shifting cargo changes the steering and braking behavior. Therefore, secure bags, beverage crates, and tools to prevent them from sliding. Practice your first few rides with a typical everyday load in an open area. A fully loaded cargo bike accelerates, steers, and brakes differently than an unloaded bicycle.

Motor and range of the Cube Cargo Hybrid

The motor also depends on the model year. Older Cargo Hybrid 500 and Cargo Dual Hybrid 1000 models use the fourth-generation Bosch Cargo Line motor with 85 Nm of torque. This drive was developed for heavy loads and frequent starting. The torque is particularly helpful when starting at traffic lights and on inclines.

The 2026 generation uses the Bosch Smart System. Depending on the model, Bosch Cargo Line or Performance Line CX drives are used. Depending on the version, the support values are up to 95 or 100 Nm. Therefore, always check the specifications of the selected bike instead of applying one motor value to all Cube Cargo models.

Battery variantSuitable applicationSpecial feature
500 WhShort city trips, school runs and daily errandsInstalled in older Cargo Hybrid models.
DualBattery 1000 WhLong daily distances and commercial useTwo 500 Wh batteries for older dual models.
800 WhEveryday use, commutes, and longer toursStandard battery of the current model generation.
800 Wh with PowerMore 250Long distances, many climbs, or frequent heavy loadsIncreases the total capacity to 1050 Wh.

What is the range?

A fixed mileage specification is not very meaningful for a cargo bike. Cargo weight, assistance level, inclines, headwinds, outside temperature, tire pressure, and frequent stopping and starting all influence consumption. Two trips with the same battery capacity can therefore yield significantly different results. A heavy load is particularly significant on inclines. High motor assistance also increases energy demand.

If you mainly ride short distances in a flat city, an older 500 Wh model may be sufficient. For daily commutes with children, varied routes, and longer weekend tours, an 800 Wh battery offers more reserve. An older DualBattery model with 1000 Wh or a current 800 Wh model with a 250 Wh PowerMore battery is better suited for delivery trips, many changes in elevation, and days with multiple stages.

Do not plan based on the theoretical maximum range. Keep a reserve in the battery for detours, cold weather, and headwinds. For models with the Bosch Smart System, the range prediction and route functions of the eBike Flow app help with planning. The displayed range takes into account the selected assistance mode, among other factors.

Can a second battery be retrofitted?

For older Cargo Hybrid 500 models with the appropriate DualBattery preparation, an expansion to two 500 Wh batteries may be possible. Whether the frame, wiring, and Bosch system are prepared for this must be checked based on the specific model. Installation should be carried out by a specialist workshop.

The current 800 Wh models are not designed as a classic DualBattery system with a second 800 Wh battery. For these, Cube offers the Bosch PowerMore option with an additional 250 Wh. The maximum total capacity is therefore 1050 Wh. Anyone buying a used bike or a previous year's model should therefore carefully distinguish whether the term DualBattery or PowerMore is being used.

Children in the Cube Cargo: bench seat, seatbelts, and rain cover

A maximum of two children can ride in the transport box. The appropriate Cube bench seat is required for this. The current Cargo 2.0 bench seat includes two seats and two padded three-point harnesses with magnetic buckles. Its maximum load capacity is 40 kg. This is lower than the general box limit of 60 kg. Therefore, when transporting children, the lower limit of the accessory being used applies.

  • The bench seat creates two fixed seats in the EPP box and can be removed if the entire box is needed for luggage.
  • The supplied harnesses must be correctly fastened and adjusted to the children's size throughout the entire journey.
  • The Cargo 3.0 rain cover protects against rain and dirt. A roll-up window and a fly screen provide visibility and ventilation.
  • A box cover protects shopping and luggage when no children are riding. There are versions for boxes with and without an installed bench seat.
  • A suitable bicycle helmet is part of the children's safety equipment on every ride.

Even if only a single child is riding along, they must sit in one of the two outer seats intended for this purpose and be properly secured with the three-point seat belt there. Two children are to be secured in the designated seats. Do not let children enter or sit in the box unsupervised. Hold the bicycle firmly with both hands while they are getting in. For children who cannot get in by themselves, a second adult is helpful.

The Cargo 3.0 rain cover is assembled using fiberglass rods, connectors, and a metal clip. Water-repellent material keeps the box dry. The PVC window provides visibility, while the roll-up fly screen allows air into the interior. Before every ride, check that the cover is securely fastened and that no straps or clothing are caught.

Is the Cube Cargo suitable for parents of different heights?

The one-size concept is designed for riders between approximately 1.60 m and 1.90 m tall. The saddle and stem can be adjusted in just a few simple steps. This allows multiple people to share one bike. Markings on the seat post and stem make it easy to switch between two settings. Before the first ride, each person should check the brake levers, seat height, and handlebar position.

This adjustability is practical for families because it means each parent doesn't need their own cargo bike. However, it does not replace a test ride. Leg length, arm length, and preferred seating position differ even among people of the same height. Also, test putting the bike on its stand, maneuvering it, and starting off with a loaded box.

Comparison of the Cube Cargo Comfort and Sport

For older model years, the main difference between the Cargo Hybrid Comfort and Cargo Sport Hybrid lies in the gear system. Comfort models use a continuously variable hub gear. Sport models feature a Shimano derailleur. The choice affects operation, maintenance requirements, and performance on inclines.

FeatureCargo Hybrid ComfortCargo Sport Hybrid
GearingStepless Enviolo hub gearShimano 10-speed derailleur gear
OperationTranslation can be adjusted without fixed gear stepsClearly defined gears with direct shifting feel
Shifting at a standstillPossible and practical for frequent traffic light stopsOnly possible to a limited extent; downshifting before coming to a stop is recommended
MaintenanceLow-maintenance protected systemChain and cassette require regular cleaning and lubrication
Area of applicationCity traffic, everyday family use and frequent stop-and-goHilly terrain and riders preferring a sportier shifting feel

If you encounter many traffic lights and intersections daily, the Comfort version is pleasant. You can adjust the gear ratio while stationary and start off again in a light gear. The Sport version is a better fit if you prefer fixed gear steps and regularly ride longer or hilly routes.

For the 2026 model year, Cube has reorganized the series. In addition to the Cargo Hybrid 800, there is the Comfort Pro, Comfort Pro Family, and Comfort SLX.

The Family model is already offered with a bench seat, seatbelts, and a rain cover. The Comfort versions use a continuously variable Enviolo hub gear. The regular Cargo Hybrid 800, on the other hand, has a Shimano Cues derailleur. Buyers should therefore not filter based solely on the older labels Comfort and Sport, but instead compare the battery, gearing, and family accessories of the specific offer.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Cube Cargo

Does a Maxi-Cosi infant car seat fit in the Cube Cargo? Pfeil runter

Cube does not currently offer its own Maxi-Cosi adapter in its official range of accessories for the Cargo Hybrid. While there are third-party solutions available, this does not imply general approval for every infant carrier, adapter, or model year. Have the combination checked by a specialist dealer before use. The adapter provider must expressly confirm compatibility with the bike, box, infant carrier, and rain cover.

Take the weight of the infant carrier, adapter, and child into account when considering the box's load capacity. The construction must not interfere with the belts, steering, or visibility. Older Cube manuals specify that the box is for children who can sit up on their own and state a minimum age of nine months for this. Therefore, an expressly approved solution is required for younger infants. A homemade mounting is not a safe alternative.

Can a second battery be retrofitted on the Cube Cargo? Pfeil runter

That depends on the model year. Older models may be prepared for the Bosch DualBattery with a total of 1000 Wh. For current 800 Wh models, a 250 Wh PowerMore battery is intended instead. A second battery on the frame ensures optimal weight distribution, though you should plan for longer charging times when using two batteries. Check the part number and have a specialist dealer clarify which expansion is compatible with the Bosch system.

What is the maximum number of children that fit in the Cube Cargo? Pfeil runter

The Cube bench seat provides space for two children. Both must sit in the designated seats and be buckled up. The current Cargo 2.0 bench seat has a maximum load capacity of 40 kg. In addition, the system weight and the box limit must be observed. A third seating position is not intended.

What helps if the EPP transport box squeaks? Pfeil runter

First, clean the contact surfaces between the box, rubber mat, bench seat, and frame. Sand and fine dirt can cause noise when moving. After that, check whether any visible fasteners are loose. Work on load-bearing screw connections should be carried out by a specialist workshop.

Material-compatible anti-squeak tape can help at known contact points, provided it does not alter the fastening. Use sprays or lubricants only after consulting the dealer. Unsuitable agents can attack EPP, rubber, or adjacent components and bind dirt. Recurring clicking should be investigated before the bicycle is heavily loaded again.

Is there a rain cover for the Cube Cargo bike? Pfeil runter

Yes. The Cube Rain Cover Cargo 3.0 is available for Cargo Hybrid models. It protects the box from rain and dirt and features a PVC window as well as a roll-up insect screen. The structure is secured using fiberglass rods and a metal clamp. For transporting children, the cover can be combined with the bench seat. When buying an older bike, check whether the attachment points and accessory version are compatible.

Which Cube Cargo is suitable for families? Pfeil runter

The Cargo Hybrid Comfort Pro Family 800 is designed as a ready-to-use family setup. This version already comes equipped with a bench seat, seat belts, and a rain cover. For other models, these parts can be added separately. Compare the total price, including accessories, before deciding between a Family model and a retrofitted Cargo Hybrid.

Which Cube Cargo is suitable for frequent transport? Pfeil runter

For short city trips, a model with a derailleur gear system and a large standard battery is often sufficient. If you stop at many traffic lights or want as little maintenance as possible, a comfort version with an Enviolo hub gear system is a good fit. For long workdays, older DualBattery models or a current 800 Wh model with PowerMore are of interest. The required range, the actual load weight, and the terrain remain the decisive factors.
