Cube Trike Hybrid: E-cargo bike for family and commercial use

The Cube Trike combines the transport capacity of a cargo bike with the stability of three wheels. Its cargo bed is positioned behind the rider. This keeps the bike compact enough for many bike paths, entrances, and parking spaces, with a maximum width of 74 cm. With a total length of around 220 cm, it also requires significantly less parking space than a car. This makes the Cube Trike Hybrid an attractive option for transporting children, larger grocery runs, and commercial trips in the city.

The Cube e-cargo bike is particularly suitable as a replacement for short car trips when children, tools, packages, or groceries need to be transported regularly. The series includes three variants for this purpose: Family with child seats, Cargo with a closed box, and Flatbed with an open loading platform.

The decisive difference compared to a rigid cargo trike lies in the tilting technology. The front section moves with the rider when cornering, while the two rear wheels and the cargo area remain largely level. The ride feel is therefore more similar to a conventional e-bike. A Bosch Cargo Line motor provides assistance when starting and on inclines. Depending on the model, 750 Wh or 1500 Wh of battery capacity are available.

A comparison of the Cube Trike models Family, Cargo, and Flatbed

All Cube Trike models use the same basic concept of three wheels, a short wheelbase, electric drive, and a cargo area decoupled from the front bicycle section. Differences lie in the transport solution and available battery capacities. Anyone who clarifies their intended use first can therefore quickly narrow down their choice of model.

Cube Trike Flatbed HybridBulky goods, market stalls, crates and custom superstructuresOpen, flexibly usable load area750 WhUp to 60 kg on the platform, optional Eurobox adapters

The Family model is the right choice when children and groceries are the main focus. The Cargo model is better suited for protected transport of goods. The Flatbed offers the greatest freedom regarding the shape and dimensions of the load. However, it requires appropriate securing with straps, brackets, or a suitable superstructure.

The decision between 750 Wh and 1500 Wh depends less on a fixed number of kilometers than on your riding profile. Short city trips with regular charging opportunities usually favor 750 Wh. Those who ride many kilometers daily, tackle longer inclines, or rarely have the chance to recharge will benefit from the extra reserve of the DualBattery version. Two 750 Wh batteries combine for a total of 1500 Wh.

How many children fit in the Cube Trike Family?

The Cube Trike Family is designed for up to two children. The bench seat is located in the EPP transport box behind the rider. High side walls and a raised rear wall shield the seating area from the surroundings. The children are secured by a multi-part harness system with shoulder and lap belts. Cube specifies a height guideline of up to 125 cm. Since torso and leg length can vary among children of the same height, a test seating with both children should take place before purchase.

The standard integrated rain cover protects passengers from precipitation and wind. A gas pressure damper makes opening easy. When no children are on board, the bench seat and seat belts can be stowed away or removed. The box can then be used for beverage crates, school bags, or weekly grocery shopping. This means the Family model does not have to serve permanently as a dedicated children's transport vehicle.

When loading, weight is more important than the number of seats. The maximum load in the rear box is 50 kg. In addition to the weight of the children, bags, helmets, and other items must therefore also be taken into account. Heavy luggage should be placed as low and as evenly distributed as possible.

Cube Trike Cargo and Flatbed for professional transport

The Cube Trike Cargo is aimed at users who want to transport goods in a weather-protected and secure manner. The lightweight EPP box is waterproof, lockable, and designed for loads of up to 50 kg. Its height can be adjusted to accommodate different transport tasks. A dog can also be transported inside with appropriate restraint.

The Flatbed replaces the enclosed box with an open platform. This design is practical when transporting standardized containers or items with unusual dimensions. Suitable adapters are available for Euroboxes. Custom superstructures are also easier to implement on the platform than in a fixed-shape box.

  • A craft business can transport tool cases, machinery, and consumables in a lockable cargo box.
  • A delivery service benefits from the protected box and the tight turning radius for frequent stops.
  • A club can secure sports equipment, event technology, or crates of drinks on the flatbed.
  • A market stall can be transported on the open platform, provided the weight and dimensions are within the specified limits.
  • Caretaker services can move cleaning agents and work tools between nearby buildings without needing a car.

The rear loading area holds up to 50 kg on the Cargo model and up to 60 kg on the Flatbed. An optional front luggage rack provides extra space for smaller items. Depending on the permitted load, up to 20 kg can be transported there. The load should always be distributed so that heavy items are positioned low and do not shift during travel.

Does the Cube Trike have a tilting mechanism?

Yes, the Cube Trike features a tilting mechanism. It separates the movement of the front section of the bike from the rear cargo unit. The handlebars, frame, and rider tilt inward when cornering, just like on a standard bicycle. The cargo bed and the two rear wheels remain largely horizontal.

This design solves a typical problem of rigid cargo trikes. On a rigid trike, the entire frame stays upright in a turn. The rider must reduce speed early and consciously compensate for the lateral forces. With the Cube Trike, the rider can take turns with a more familiar body movement, which makes the transition from a regular bicycle or e-bike easier.

Technically, two separate chain circuits work together with a constant-velocity joint. This allows the front section to tilt without causing the rear unit to move to the same extent. A differential on the rear axle allows the two rear wheels to rotate at different speeds. The outer wheel covers a longer distance in a turn and must therefore rotate faster than the inner wheel. This solution improves cornering and prevents unnecessary strain in the drivetrain.

However, the tilting technology does not mean that the cargo trike cannot tip over under any circumstances. Excessive speed, abrupt steering movements, sloping ground, or poorly secured cargo can throw any multi-track vehicle off balance. Especially in tight corners, speed should be adjusted to the load and the surface. A test ride without a load and then with a realistic load helps to get to know the handling characteristics.

When stationary, the two rear wheels support the trike. When parked, the brake system's locking mechanism secures the bike against rolling away. This is helpful when loading, as well as when children are getting in and out. Nevertheless, the locking function does not replace the need for a carefully chosen parking spot. The Cube Trike should not be left unattended with children or heavy loads on steep inclines.

The position of the cargo area also affects handling. Because children or cargo sit behind the rider, the front remains relatively short. When entering an intersection, the rider does not have to push a long transport box into their field of vision first. At the same time, it is not as easy for the rider to look at the passengers during the ride as it is with a Long John cargo bike with a front box.

Bosch Cargo Line motor and DualBattery

The Bosch Cargo Line motor is tuned for e-cargo bikes and delivers up to 85 Nm of torque. This high torque is particularly helpful when starting off with a full box, on ramps, and on inclines. Assistance kicks in depending on the selected riding mode and your own pedal pressure. The Cube Trike therefore does not move on its own. The motor amplifies the rider's pedaling power.

With a loaded cargo trike, a controllable start is more important than a high top speed. Motor assistance makes it easier to get the mass moving from a standstill. A continuously variable Enviolo Cargo hub gear allows for small changes in gear ratio without having to select fixed gear steps. Before an incline, the gear ratio can be adjusted so that a steady cadence is maintained.

The Kiox 300 display shows speed, battery level, and trip data, among other things. The LED Remote on the handlebar is used for operation without having to take a hand far from the grip. The components are part of the Bosch Smart System and can be connected to the eBike Flow app. Which functions are available depends on the equipment and the software version of the respective bike.

The 750 Wh version is sufficient for many typical city trips. Nevertheless, a specific range cannot be stated across the board. Total weight, assistance level, inclines, tire pressure, temperature, wind, and frequent starting all affect energy consumption. A fully loaded Cube Trike in city traffic usually consumes more energy than a light trekking e-bike on a level route.

If you take children to school in the morning, then commute to work, and can charge at home, a 750 Wh battery is often the practical choice. If the trike is used for deliveries all day or covers longer distances without the possibility of charging, the 1500 Wh version offers more flexibility. It uses two PowerTube batteries, each with 750 Wh. However, the larger capacity also increases the weight and does not replace realistic route planning.

Electric assistance ends at 25 km/h. Above this speed, the Cube e-cargo bike can still be ridden, but the motor no longer provides any additional power. In loaded city traffic, a sensible speed is often lower. Weight, braking distance, and width require more distance from other road users than on a light bicycle.

The one-size concept for multiple riders

The Cube Trike is offered in one frame size. The "One Size Concept" is intended for body heights from approximately 1.60 m to 1.90 m. A telescopic seat post and an adjustable stem allow for adaptation to different riders. The low step-through makes it easier to mount, especially when the box is already loaded.

The concept is well-suited for households, businesses, or clubs where multiple people use the same cargo bike. Before each ride, the seat height and handlebar position should be checked. The rider must be able to reach the pedals safely and hold the handlebars firmly, even during hard braking. An unsuitable setting impairs control more significantly than on a lightweight bicycle because the Cube Trike weighs around 65 to 75 kg, depending on the model.

The height range of 1.60 m to 1.90 m is a guideline. Arm length, leg length, and personal riding posture may require individual adjustments. Those at the lower or upper end of this range should test ride the cargo tricycle before purchasing. A second test ride with a typical load is advisable, as handling, braking distance, and starting off change when loaded.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Cube Trike

How fast does a Cube Trike go? Pfeil runter

The motor provides assistance up to 25 km/h, which classifies the Cube Trike as a pedelec. Faster speeds are possible using your own power, but the motor assistance cuts out above 25 km/h. When carrying children or heavy loads, speed should be adjusted well in advance for curves, visibility, and braking distance.

How much does the Cube Trike Hybrid weigh? Pfeil runter

The weight depends on the model and configuration. According to the manufacturer, the Trike Family Hybrid and the Cargo Hybrid each weigh 75 kg, while the Flatbed Hybrid weighs around 65 kg. These values may vary for other model years or configurations. Due to this dead weight, it should be clarified before purchase whether the parking space is accessible without stairs or narrow doors.

Can the Cube Trike Hybrid tip over? Pfeil runter

Thanks to its three wheels, the Cube Trike is more stable than a two-wheeler. The tilting technology supports natural cornering, but does not completely rule out the risk of tipping over. Fast cornering, uneven ground, and a high or poorly secured center of gravity increase the risk. Even loading and an adjusted speed remain necessary.

Which motor does the Cube Trike use? Pfeil runter

The corresponding versions use a Bosch Cargo Line Drive Unit with up to 85 Nm of torque. The system provides powerful support when starting and on inclines. Depending on the model, the equipment includes the Kiox 300 display, the LED Remote, and one or two Bosch PowerTube batteries, each with 750 Wh.

Do you have to put your foot down at traffic lights on the Cube Trike? Pfeil runter

The two rear wheels provide the Cube Trike with stability when at a standstill. During a short stop, your feet can therefore generally remain on the pedals, provided the bike is standing securely and the brakes are applied. The locking function on the braking system is intended for longer stops and for parking. On uneven or sloping ground, the rider should additionally stabilize the bike with one foot.

What is the maximum payload of the Cube Trike? Pfeil runter

The maximum system weight is 220 kg. This includes the cargo bike, the rider, the load, and any installed accessories. Individual limits also apply: the rider's weight may be up to 110 kg, the rear box can hold up to 50 kg or the cargo area up to 60 kg, and an approved front rack up to 20 kg. These values must not be added together independently if doing so would exceed the total system weight of 220 kg.

Is there a rain cover available for the Cube Trike? Pfeil runter

The Cube Trike Family features an integrated rain cover as part of its transport solution. It protects children and smaller items of luggage from rain and wind while riding. A gas pressure damper keeps the cover open when it is raised. Before every ride, you should check that the cover is closed and that no loose parts can get near the wheels or the drive system.
